Established in 1922 as "Radio Frequency Laboratories" in rural Boonton Township, New Jersey, initially the company’s focus was on research and development. In 1929, war hero General James H Doolittle made the first successful "blind flight" with instrument-only take-off and landing on the airstrip adjacent to the company using an RFL radio.
A major power blackout in the USA in 1965, caused by a single short-circuit in one protection scheme, showed that more reliable primary and back-up protection schemes were required for the nation’s power protection network. RFL seized this opportunity to work with its customers to develop new solutions for better communications equipment.
By the 1980s, RFL was deeply involved in the development and manufacture of instrumentation and communications products and systems.
Today
Entering the 21st century RFL has narrowed the focus of its business to the development and supply of rugged communications and protection systems for utility applications. Products offered by RFL include multiplexers, powerline carrier systems, control and telemetry systems, teleprotection and protective relaying.
Implementation of communications systems for critical applications has remained RFL’s focus. Understanding the need for reliable network infrastructure has led the company to develop and introduce unique hardware redundancy options for its products for mission-critical applications.
